Project: Box Village – Planning Phase

Category: Construction / Mechanics

Target group: Children of 3 to 6 years in kindergarten

Goals: Develop ideas for building a box village, gather materials

Where: Group area

How long: approx. 3 days

What: Preparations for building a box village

Preparation:

Material:

Picture book by W. Metzger / F. Nahrgang: „Jetzt bauen wir ein Haus“. Ravensburger 33436 (or a comparable picture book, which describes the building of houses).

Crayons, firm paper.

A letter inviting parents to a parents’ evening.

Steps:

1.      Contemplation of the picture book with the children in kindergarten: The picture book should supply information about all activities around the construction of buildings. The children talk about their own experiences with building sites and renovations.

2.      The children take over the roles of “little architects" and draw building plans. A planning briefcase develops. (The nursery school teacher adds explanations if the children ask him or her to do this).

3.  Clarifying what materials are required, decision on the place of the "building site" and ways of proceeding. 4. Parents are invited and informed about the idea of the project. Parents contribute with their own ideas and also supply the necessary materials.
