Project: Box village – Finishing the houses’ interior

Category: Construction / Mechanics

Target group: Children from 3 to 6 years in kindergarten

Goals:

- learn to wallpaper

- distribute the work among themselves in a fair way

- find solutions for the interior decoration of the houses

Where: : covered play area or gymnasium

How long: approx. 1 - 2 mornings

What: Wallpaper the houses; decorate doors and windows

Preparation:

Material: wallpapering table, wallpaper, paste, brushes, scissors, smocks, measuring sticks; rags of curtains, wing clips for envelopes, rubber bands or the like

and whatever else the children want to use as furniture or decorative articles.

Steps:

1.      The children first plan and then carry out the work of papering the walls.

2. Mounting of curtains: Wing clips are stuck through the walls of the houses and are used to stretch rubber bands over the windows; the curtains can be put over the rubber bands and moved later.

3. Further decorations depend on the children’s ideas and the purpose of the respective house.

Possible variation:

There are various other possibilities of mounting curtains. In this phase blinds can also be added. The children usually find the necessary technical solutions without help.

Note!

The younger children quickly take over the “helper” activities (e.g.

pasting), the older ones take on more demanding task, measuring for example.
