Activity 1: Light and Darkness

Optics / Light

Target group: Children of 3 to 6 years in kindergarten

Aim: Discover that light is everywhere and can only be excluded with difficulty.

Where? Group area (darkenable)

How long? approx. 50 minutes

What? Experiment with light and darkness

Preparation:

Black paper, crepe, torch, lamp, blankets, cushions, floor mats, white paper

Steps:

The children close their eyes for some time and then describe, what they have seen. They think about how they can produce complete darkness, and use the materials at hand in order to seal all cracks through which light still falls. The more accustomed the children become to the darkness, the more they realize that light penetrates through even the smallest cracks into the room. After this, the children try to get light back into the darkness. They

also see that light-coloured items (e.g. white masks) only become visible if they are lit up by a source of light.

Scientific explanation (concerning step 1): With closed eyelids we often see reproductions and otherwise a reddish-brown colour that is caused by our eyelidsÂ’ skin and

blood vessels. Our eyes are highly sensitive to each beam of light. But only after 45 minutes in the dark has the iris opened so far that it also notices even minimal rays of light.

Possible Variation: The children play ghosts, lantern parade or the like in the dark or in semi-darkness.

Note!

Children who are afraid of the dark may leave the room.
