Activity 3: Light and Light Reflection

Optics / Light

Target group: Children of 3 to 6 years in kindergarten

Aim: Getting to know the linear propagation and reflection of rays of light

Where? Darkenable group area

How long? 45 minutes

What? Observe rays of light and re-direct them

Preparation:

Open cardboard box (a large shoe box for example) the inside of which has been pasted with black paper with a hole of approx. 2 x 2 cm in the front wall; comb, torch, mirror

Steps:

The children shine the torch from the outside through the hole and into the cardboard box, and see and describe the light cone on the black surface. They hold the comb between the light source and the hole, and can in this way identify "rays of light" and describe their propagation. They hold the mirror in the box, and try holding it in different positions. They recognize that the rays can be directed.

Scientific Explanation:

Light spreads into an area in a straight line and in rays. It is reflected by a mirror in the same angle in which it hits the surface.

Possible Variation:

If the bottom and the second front wall of the cardboard box are covered with white paper, the children can draw the rays on the paper and look at the result with the lights switched on.

The children experiment as to how they can produce a flashing light (similar to the blue

light of a police car) with the help of the comb.

Note!

Children who become afraid in the dark may leave the room.
