Activity 8: Light and Colours

Optics / Light

Target group: Children of 3 to 6 years in kindergarten

Aim: The children observe coloured light and experience how this affects their condition

Where? Group area

How long? 45 minutes

What? Experiencing a colour-light-room

Preparation:

-         Line the room with white cloths and mattresses

-         Provide red, yellow, green, blue 100-Watt-bulbs

-         torch, mirror ball, polished crystal drops on a ribbon, black light neon tube (20 Watt)

-         CD with relaxing music

Meditative story

Steps:

The children settle down, first they experience absolute darkness, then the effect of the coloured light on the walls, on their skin and their clothes. They describe the effect, try different light combinations and decide which one makes them feel best.

Scientific Explanation:

Concerning the mirror ball: When the small mirrors are illuminated, they produce a pattern (breaking the light into the colours of the spectrum) and movements (turning of the ball) on the projection surfaces.

Possible Variation:

The nursery school teacher tells a short story, while the children relax in

the colour-light-room.

Note!

Spotlights can become very hot, therefore you must make sure that no child burns him/herself and no inflammable materials are within reach.
